Darkness Is Your Friend

I know that many people would disagree with such title and righteously so. Because how can someone say that the darkness is our friend when all it does is creates suffering and challenges that wont allow us to move in the direction of our desires?

I am not going to deny that I had my share of challenges. Yet, as I decided to use each and every one of those challenges as simply opportunities for growth, I began to understand the true purpose of darkness. Not only so, I also discovered that the challenges we perceive in life and the suffering we think we experience have nothing to do with the so called "darkness" itself. It has to do with our perception of what darkness may mean to each one of us at that particular moment in time.

What I have discovered about the darkness is that aside from bringing contrasts into our lives, is simply makes life more exciting!

Imagine you are a basketball player. And every time you shoot the ball you end up scoring. Would that make the game more interesting? Absolutely not! The time will come when you'll get so bored of the fact that there is no challenge that you would ultimately stop playing. Same thing with life. If there was no challenge and you knew every outcome in advance, then what is the purpose of living? Life would be a very boring experience.

So when the darkness shows up, instead of seeing it as something negative or bad, we begin to appreciate the fact that it is only giving us an opportunity to have the experience we are seeking. We begin to bless it and welcome it as our friend, not our enemy.

Here is a little secret about the darkness. The darkness can show up in your life, but it can't touch you nor stop you. And that is because the moment it touches you, it disappears. And since the darkness cannot touch you because it would disappear, then by default, it cannot stop you. Allow me to elaborate on what I have said.

Who you are is the light of Spirit. You are the everlasting light or creation. That is the reason why wherever there is light, darkness cannot exists. That is a fact! If you don't believe me, light up a candle in the dark and see what happens. However, because of free will, you have been given the opportunity to choose the intensity to which you want your light to shine. You can let it radiate out fully, to the point where darkness can't get anywhere near, or you can dim your light very low where the darkness can get as close to you as it can without touching you.

Here is how it works! You begin moving forward in the direction of a desire. Then this cloud called darkness shows up. At first, you get scared and start backing away. So as you continue backing away, the darkness keeps getting closer. Keep in mind however that all the darkness is doing is giving you an opportunity to bring some excitement into your life, trying to make it more interesting. It is giving you the opportunity for you to have the experience you are seeking. That is why it is said that God is the sinner and the saint. Because the darkness is simply God disguised as the opposite of who you are in order to allow you the experience of becoming whatever is is you want to become, or whatever it is you want to create or experience in your life.

So because of the fact that most people have forgotten that little detail, they continue to back away to the point where they either give into the darkness, or they do something about it. So for the sake of this example, the equivalent of doing something about it means that you decide to take one step forward. At that moment you notice something very interesting. The moment you took that step forward, the darkness took one step backward. You still may not realize the reason for the darkness to step back. However, you were able to gain a little bit of courage. From that experience you went ahead and took another step. The darkness still close, needless to say, another backward step was taken by it.

After few of those steps you begin to gain momentum. In other words, you begin the become aware. You start regaining your power. Now that you are taking many steps forward and much faster than the original steps, the darkness not being able to more backward as fast as you can move forward, eventually will give way because as I have already explained, the darkness cannot take a chance of being touch by your light, otherwise it will disappear.

Once you have successfully moved in the direction of your desire and have overcome that darkness, few things you have gain from the experience.

  • You have recognized your power.
  • You have become stronger and wiser to the point that now you can expand even more on your dreams and desires.
  • You are a much happy and fulfilled individual.
  • You have made a statement that says, this is who I am!
  • Through your courage, you have become an example to the world which indeed will assist others in overcoming their fear of darkness.
  • Interesting enough, when you look back at it, you can really appreciate the presence of that darkness in your life. That's why I and people who have achieve great deal of success and wisdom say something to the effect of; "Al though in many occasions things were rough, to this day, I would never give up any of those experiences."

So if you let the darkness get so far close to you to the point that you may feel overwhelmed by it, three things can happen.

  1. You may end up learning how to live with that to the point that your life experience becomes very miserable and unhappy. That is why many people spend countless hours behing their TV's and computers. To try to forget what their whole life is about.
  2. Maybe the pain is so overwhelming to the point that you try to do whatever it takes to get rid of it either through the use of unhealthy substances such as drugs, excessive alcohol, food, or maybe finding a direct way to put an end to your existence.
  3. Or, the pain is so unbearable, that you decide to do something about it. It pushes you to grow beyond your self imposed limitation.

Number 1 & 2 are pretty obvious. Let's focus on the third choice. If for some reason some people hit bottom, and that learning process have led them to live the life they have always dreamed of, would you say that the darkness was a bad thing? You may say, maybe not. However, you could also argue the fact that they didn't have to go through any of that in order to live the life they deserve. To that statement I must say that you could be right. I don't think people have to go through negative experiences in order to live a happy and fulfilled life.

However, here is where I am going to challenge you. First of all, what is a negative experience? You may say, a loss of a job, betrayal by a lover, injustice in the world. OK, let's take all three of them and see what we can come up with.

Loss of a job: Let's say someone gets a phone call in the morning from work letting him know that he no longer have a job. This man now have all the right to feel angry and upset, and is probably wondering how is he going to support his family, etc. Is that a bad thing or a good thing? If you think it is a bad thing, I like you to ponder on the following statement. What if the men worked on the 108th floor at the World Trade Center and he got the call on the morning of September 11.

Betrayal of a lover: You are a writer who haven't achieve any major success. Then you found yourself falling in love with someone and got married. For a while you were OK with it but down in your gut you feel there is something missing in your life. And the challenge is, you don't know what it is. After all, you have convinced yourself that writing is something few people can make a living out of, and off course, having children, the responsibilities of being a housewife wont make things any easier. Like most people, you gave up on that dream. You learned to accept your life just like most people do.

Then one day he lives you. Out of pain and anguish you find yourself writing as an outlet to express how you feel. In other words, the deep heart felt words that came out of that experience are now put on paper. A friend reads them and is deeply touched and moved by those words. He asks you to submit it to publishers but you are so discouraged by the fact that you have been writings for years and nothing happened. However, this time you went ahead and gave it one last try. 6 months later you are a #1 best selling author and a millionaire mom!

Injustice in the world: That I must say that it is a tough one because when we see people suffering it moves us. And even when we could say that they have drawn all that experiences to themselves, we still can't help but to feel for them. Why is that? Because spiritually we are all connected. In human form it appears as if we are separate from one another. In spirit form however, we are all just part of the very same being that created us. We are an extension of that energy called love.

If injustice in the world moves you to speak your truth, to tell your story, to inspire others, then instead of cursing it, just do something about it! If that helps spark the passion in your life and moves you like it did to Mother Theresa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Jesus the Christ and many others, then don't curse it. Bless it for it is giving you an opportunity to have the experience of a lifetime. The experience of knowing that you are a messenger of truth, a healer, a saint! Without those circumstances, there would be nothing for you to do!

So remember, it is all GOOD! Why? Because it is all GOD! Darkness is your friend if you see it for what it is and understand it's purpose. Yes, you heard me right. Darkness have a purpose. It forces you to shine your light!
