Goals vs Sense of Direction

A lot has been told in regards to goals. Some say you should have them, some say don't. Some say that in order for a human being to be happy he must have a goal and must have a belief in the attainment of it while other spiritual sources say we should not have goals, all we need to do is enjoy the present moment and let the universe handle all the details.

Does that mean that setting goals is bad? Well, there was a point in my life where I was very confused about it because I wanted to have great things yet, I also wanted to experience peace without having to be so concerned about what to do next.

As I began observing people, and seeing my life in relationship to what others were doing, it was pretty frustrating because I didn't know what to do. Sometimes I felt as if my life was just passing by me while others were accomplishing things. Interesting enough, I was noticing that even when my efforts were minimal, I was actually accomplishing many things.

I remember once when I needed personal management for my career as a comedian, an actor friend of mine said to me, "man, you have to get your promo ready, send out pictures and follow up with calls like my roommate did. He send out like 25 promo packages, he got like three appointments and he got himself an agent." I appreciated his suggestion. During that time, I had just finished two scripts for two different sitcom ideas that came through me. A few days later, a dear friend of mine from Chicago _we had just finished working in Georgia few months ago, and by the way, we hadn't seen each other for almost three years _ comes to L. A., and stayed at my place.

A few minutes into our conversation I showed him my scripts and he goes on telling me that his management company, which has offices in N.Y. and L. A., currently do not have any Hispanic entertainers and that he could send my sitcoms and promo to them if I wanted to. He calls his agent on the phone and we talked. I send her my stuff and within a week I had an appointment with the L. A. office. Not only are they a management company but they also act as agents when it comes to comedy. So instead of having an agent taking 10% commission and management taking 15% commission, I ended up with both for only 15% commission.

In my book entitled All Your Dreams Are Meant To Be Fulfilled! I relate the story of going from almost nothing to having a holding deal for a TV show, move to L.A. and generated $44,000 in income by simply surrendering. I know it sounds difficult to believe but that is exactly my point. Surrendering, like some may say, has nothing to do with not having goals. I see it more like a way of trusting our inner guidance in spite of circumstances. So what I began to notice is not that I didn't have any ambitions or sense of direction, but that there was a guidance that would let me know what to do at any moment.

So really there is nothing wrong with having goals for they will provide you with what you want. It is just that the things we want may not necessarily be the best things for us. Yet, when we trust our inner guidance, we not only enjoy the things we are doing at every moment but we also seem to experience nonresistance _ or what some say, effortless accomplishments. This allows us to experience peace as opposed to the stress that comes as a result of trying to make things happen or forcing things to happen which in every case just creates more problems resulting in physical imbalances or to put it in different words, degenerative diseases.

So having a sense of direction is really having a goal. The difference is, our actions are more geared towards self expression as opposed to personal acquisition. It is like being naturally driven as opposed to externally driven. Internally driven action (sense of direction) translates into - I am already perfect, whole and complete, I have plenty and I would like to share. Externally driven action (goals) translate into _ I need something to make me perfect, whole and complete. This is a fear based action that will have you chasing something for the rest of your life because no matter what do you have or accomplish, there is always something more you need to have. The truth is, if you cannot appreciate what you have in this moment, you won't be able to appreciate anything else, because even if you have $1,000,000 in your account, you will need $2,000,000 to be happy. And on and on and on.

Do not misunderstand expansion of self awareness with more. Self awareness does not mean that you won't have the two, three, or one hundred billion for that matter, it simply means that you no longer need to chase all that because you can recognize all of it as a part of your divine nature. So instead of trying to make more, you simply experience more, and as a result of your experience the physical world will provide you with the right amount for whatever is you desire because your desires are like suggestions from the Holly Spirit expressing His/Her desires through you.

God's desires are your sense of direction which you have the choice to act upon them or not, because you have been given free choice. However, where does God reside? Within you. So regardless whether you think the suggestions are coming from someone or something else telling you, or you are the one making the decision, somewhere deep within your being, soul, or whatever you choose to name it, there is a degree of clarity about doing things that brings you joy. Take that action that brings you joy and let it be your compass. On the other hand, external goals leads to separation from your true source reinforcing the illusion that you have to chase things outside yourself in order to experience happiness and success. Simply remember these words by a master teacher named Jesus The Christ; "seek you first the kingdom of heaven and his righteousness, and all of these things will be given to you."

Listen to your inner guidance and you will be led closer to the kingdom for it is within you. Strive for external goals and you will be driven away from your infinite inner treasures which you do not have to strive for, but to simply recognize them.
